FAQs

If you have the question, we have the answer

Q: What size screen do I need?
A: There are general rules regarding screen size. However, just like some people like to sit near the front of the theater while others like to sit near the back, rules are meant to be broken. For example, on our 96" screen, we typically recommend that seating be no closer than 10 feet from the screen.

Final screen size is also determined by room size, wall height, and potential ceiling obstructions. Our theater designers will help you determine which size best fits your room.

Q: What about High Definition TV?
A: All our projectors are ready for High Definition. As you may already know, nearly all network television will be broadcast in HDTV format within a few years, and many stations are already sending an HDTV signal. Many cable and satellite systems are adding High Definition options for their subscribers.

Q: What is surround sound?
A: The answer to this question is fairly long. Please click here

Q: Can I install the theater system myself?
A: There is more involved with installation than most people realize. But we always offer self-installation as an option for the do-it-youself installer. Installation requires carpentry skills, calculations for off-sets, precise screen alignment, precise projector ceiling mount positioning and calibration, audio/video connection familiarity for AV receivers and multi source input/output setup, wire hiding, speaker placement, calibration for room acoustics, and sub-woofer crossover calibration, just to name a few. If you have cable television, you should be familiar with ground isolation issues—which are common. You will need an assortment of cables and connectors to complete the installation. We can supply all of the parts you will need with one of our packages. Just ask our theater designers for details.

Q: How long do projector bulbs last?
A: Most projector bulbs have an average lamp cost of 20 cents an hour based on lamp life of 1000 to 1500 movies (2000 to 3000 hours). Your actual lamp life can vary depending on the mode you use and environmental conditions. Lamp bulbs are user installable, with most users averaging 2-3 years between bulb changes. Lamp technology has come a long way since the early projector days with better light designs and durable components. When you compare the lamp cost to the extended service cost involved with large screen TVs you will end up saving money.

Q: Do I need to have light control?
A: Just like when you go to the movies, most of us prefer the lights out for the real theater experience. But projectors do not require a pitch black room to work at it's best. Each projector has a lumen rating which gives an indication of brightness. The higher the lumens, the more room light you can have while maintaining good video quality. As a general rule we try to keep lights off that are near the screen, preferring rear lighting. Sunlight must be avoided, as it will wash out the picture. By using curtains, liners or light blocking blinds, most any room can be used for home theater. See one of our theater designers for a room evaluation. We will give you tips on how to prepare your room to make it suitable for a home theater.
